Daimler, parent company of Mercedes-Benz, and Geely Holdings have mentioned that the two plan on developing next-generation hybrid powertrains along with a highly efficient gasoline engine as well.
Both the auto-industry giants said the new hybrid powertrains could feature in their respective brands. The new engine for the hybrid powertrains is expected to be a 4-cylinder and will be built at various plants in China and Europe. Oversight of the projects is expected to come from Mercedes’ powertrain division, and from Mercedes-Benz Driver Systems as well.
Rumors of Mercedes and Volvo joining hands on powertrains dates back to 2018, and the two have joined hands on the Smart brand as well and on mobility services in China. Based on recent talks it’s expected that Geely’s new dedicated EV platform which is known as the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) and could be utilized by Daimler for future compact cars from Mercedes.
Mercedes and Volvo have already combined their efforts on truck manufacturing as well, however that division is separate from the Volvo car brand. Both the companies have joined hands on the development of fuel cell powertrains for use in buses and semi-trailer trucks in the past as well.
Ever since the owner of Geely Holding bought a 9.7% stake in Daimler both the companies have combined their efforts on a lot different things from manufacturing electric trucks to gas engines that are hybrid with regard to their applicability.
With such great innovation coming out as a result of the collaboration of these two auto-industry giants it can be safely said the fans are, without a doubt, in for a treat.
