The Benz Sprinter has been a long time favorite for commercial customers all around the globe; the United States and Germany remain the two of the largest markets for this variant.
However, most of us tend to miss out on the big van despite the huge demand. The main reason for that being the low mileage range.
And when we say low, we mean less than 100 miles.
But that’s soon expected to change with the arrival of the eSprinter in 2023. Mercedes has invested over $400 Million in developing an all-new modular platform that makes configuration for larger batteries more efficient.
The platform is known as the Electric Versatility Platform, commonly referred to as the EVP and has been designed to fit into the current Sprinter body. Although the company has not lifted the covers off the specs of the new EVP, we do know that it offers three different battery sizes, two wheelbase lengths, and comes with a rear-mounted drive system. Along with that, the front section has been reversed for the power control hardware as well.
Manufacturing for the eSprinter is expected to take place at the US manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina. This is where the current Spristers are built as well. We do know that Mercedes-Benz sells smaller variants of electric vans known as the Metris, which provide a range of over 200 miles, but it’s unclear if the company has any plan on launching it in their United States lineup.
As for the eSprinter, the arrival is expected sometime in 2023 but a lot of details are still under wraps for now.
